We *almost* had it, a web in which everything was declarative markup that could scale to any screen or device, and then the JavaScript monkeys came and ruined it all. I have a feeling the same sudden swerve away from sanity occurred in many other industries at the time, but on the whole the smartphone ecosystem has had a negative impact on everything around us
