It is food. It's not good food, and it's got a ton of additives that you can do without, but it meets the definition of food. Food science IS complex, and Billy Joe from the trailer park doesn't have the knowledge or intellectual basis to come to reliably come to a factually correct conclusion on the subject. That goes for any subject that requires specific knowledge. People like to think they're equipped to instinctively understand, and arrive at the right answer on pretty much every topic, but that's just self-deception and overestimating one's intelligence and knowledge. Becoming competent requires study and experience.
