Do you agree with Michael Moorcock, who said: "Ignore all proffered rules and create your own, suitable for what you want to say"?
Not especially.
I think it is usually necessary to learn the rules in order to understand how people will receive your message and then break/ignore rules in ways that help to underscore what you're attempting to say.
Rules get a bad name because people see them as obstacles rather than parameters. Parameters help to define meaning.
