I understand engineering fully.
Firstly, the 1:1000000 engineer is not bound by borders, so this public discussion about "we want all of them" is bullshit. They will be where they want to be, and where they are most needed.
Secondly, engineering is about opportunity. The more opportunities an engineer has, the more experience they have; this combined with love and drive, the better they become.
Thirdly, the people driving this discussion are armchair economists and business majors. They have no fucking clue what the ground game looks like when it comes to developing engineers. Elon is no exception to this rule. He is acclaimed to be the greatest engineer of all time, but in reality he is more a well connected, smart and highly technical financier.
I am very impressed by Elon, but I also know he is not someone you want to be on the receiving end of a business relationship with.
