Just to close the loop on the question, my new-to-me Thinkbook T480 arrived last night. Looking forward to spending the evening getting Linux running on it. I run Debian 12 on my desktop box, but I think I'll go with Elementary OS on the laptop. The Internets suggest it's more likely to have all the drivers I need on the initial installation.
It was $211 and has 16 GB of RAM and a 250 GB SSD. Physically, it looks brand new.
