I think the reason is to be found in your first sentence
"people flock" because we, humans are herd animals.
That is why we are so easy to lead. It seem to be in our DNA to follow.
And about complex reality. Yes. I think that people are afraid of complex reality. But the irony is that the truth is way less complicated than layers of layers of lies on top of lies, the next one more contradictive than the last
