New York court annuls law that granted voting rights to migrants with residency 🇻🇪
The New York #Court of Appeals, the highest court in the state, annulled a city law that would have granted legal #immigrants the right to #vote in municipal #elections. Law 11 would have allowed some 800,000 permanent residents and beneficiaries of the Deferred Action for #Childhood Arrivals program to vote for mayor and other municipal offices. This rule was approved by the Democratic-majority City Council in December 2021, but shortly thereafter, in January 2022, it was challenged by #Republicans in the state Supreme Court, where a judge deemed it “unconstitutional.”
