It is not easy to connect with native IMAP/SMTP clients to their system, you need to have a "bridge" installed. That bridge didn't work most of the time.
Having standard IMAP/SMTP access (especially when doing email with Emacs et al). Also on mobile you are stuck with their proprietary App, there is no way to use the native email client of your OS.
Since email is transmitted between servers decrypted anyways, I really don't see the point to have a service like Protonmail.
I use Fastmail btw.
