Even though this is anecdote and thus a non-sequitur, I think I can still answer this despite not being gay.
You can find a parallel to this when Satancon ripped up a Bible on stage. While most of us would never do such a thing ourselves, you will never see an atheist/Satanist decry this, because we have no reason to please the morees of Christians, who hate us merely for existing.
