Bullet points of Landfill collapse in Uganda's capital after heavy rain leaves at least 18 people dead
- A landslide at the Kiteezi landfill in Kampala, Uganda, has killed at least 18 people and injured 14 others, with at least two of the dead being children.
- The collapse is believed to have been triggered by heavy rainfall, and the city authority said there was a 'structural failure in waste mass'.
- The Kiteezi landfill is on a steep slope in an impoverished part of the city and has been a source of income for women and children who scavenge plastic waste.
- The site has been considered for closure and relocation to a larger area outside the city since 2016, but the plan has not yet been implemented.
- Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has ordered an investigation into the incident and questioned why people were living in close proximity to the landfill.
- The president said that effluent from the site is hazardous and that people should not be living there, and called for an investigation into who allowed people to live near the landfill.
