I wonder if so many of these young people, college age looking, are doing what they are doing because they'll get a better grade from their teachers.

I believe that should be illegal. A teacher, professor, any educational professionals, should not be able to dangle a grade in front of someone to coerce them into protest something that is with the ideology of the educator. Hell, the educator should not have a bias period.
