the idea of individual, autonomous organisms is central to theories and discourses of social and sexual normativity. lichens are not autonomous plants. rather, they are a symbiotic relationship of fungi and algae. in “Queer Theory for Lichens,” D. Griffiths proposes: “thinking with lichens can potentially offer a queer way out of heteronormative narratives of human and non-human sexuality and sociality by decentering heterosexual biological reproduction as the only way that life (re)produces.”
