I think my big complaint about mp4's is that you truly need a _fast_ CDN and a _fast_ internet connection for them to be useful.
Maybe animated gifs are bigger than some mp4's, but strangely I have no issue loading images, static or animated out here in the woods. mp4's though, especially those shared on mastodon, I could walk 2 miles to the store and back and they still wouldn't be fully buffered.
Video links here for me are a >70% chance its going to take 20 minutes to fully buffer.
