Well, I haven't read it, obviously, but I think that I must have been even younger when I watched (part of) the 1984 movie.
Probably when it first aired on German television. I'm not totally sure about that, but when I was about 3 or 4 years old, I had frequent nighmares that also haunted me at day, featuring weirdly specific sounds, shapes and designs.
When I started to watch that movie around 2016, I finally knew where that might have come from 😳. I didn't watch past that point though.
