If you want to see the grip that Oxbridge has on our cultural life, just keep an eye out for how often, when cultural creators (artists, writers etc.) are revealed to have been to Oxford or Cambridge as an aside....
The defenders of Oxbridge will tell you its because they are a magnet for talent & quality... but for the rest of us it looks more like the network effect(s) of appointing/using/commissioning people you know or know of through connections made at uni.
