It bears repeating: Even an Earth absolutely ravaged by climate change, catastrophic pollution, a weakened ozone layer, and clouds of radioactive fallout from a global nuclear war would still be PARADISE compared to any kind of settlement on other planets in this solar system.
People grossly underestimate how awful off-world life would be. As entertaining as stories like The Martian are, I feel like it'd have been better if Mark Watney had died a slow, grueling, tragic death.
