The #Westvleteren Trappist beer is coming to the Netherlands, yay!
I've always liked the approach of the St Sixtus abbey - the monks handcraft one of the world's finest beers without any industrial processes, which means that supply is very limited, and you can only taste it by driving to the monastery and picking up a maximum of three crates.
But, like with all good things with low supply and high demand, profiteers flourished. You can buy a bottle at ~$2 at the monastery, but it's sold for $10 a bottle by resellers in the Netherlands. A decade ago, when St Sixtus needed money to renovate the monastery and they sold some of their bottles to Italy too, I managed to buy a few bottles for as much as ~$20 each.
The monks have now (finally) realized that selling some of their beers to selected pubs outside of their monastery would mitigate the supply issue that currently enables people to resell their bottles for a 500%/1000% profit.
