Managing a mastodon server of 50-100 has been so far doable for our crew, and the cost is about $300 a year. it’s possible that this is a scale at which ad-free, user-owned social media works well. it does require 10% of the members help govern, but I think that’s good practice for co-op culture in general. Also pay what you can works fine at this scale and sorts itself out
