The "Herrgottswinkel" refers to a dedicated religious space within traditional homes, used for devotions or the display of sacred images. It is a special, often ornately decorated area of the home, adorned with statues of saints or crucifixes.
I had never given this much thought until a friend of mine shared that when she and her young children moved to Vorarlberg, her children were initially quite startled by what they encountered. Well, there hangs a nearly naked, tormented man on a cross!
I have to admit that I've never seen it from this perspective before.
It is a symptom of the terrible disease of lack of empathy that we are all more or less afflicted with.
Do we have become desensitized to the graphic imagery of violence and suffering, whether in religious iconography or current events?
From a modern geopolitical perspective, the land where Jesus lived could be considered part of historical Palestine.
Anyway - I added a figure of a listening one to my "Herrgottswinkel".
I really do hope that these terrible wars, this terrible slaughter of innocent people will have an end in 2025.
