If Netayahu's regime sends these kids to prison, they too should be considered hostages-but held by Netanyahu not Hamas.

These draft resistors are following a long and proud tradition. They need to know the whole world has their back.

They are at serious risk to themselves walking the same path as those who refused to napalm babies for Johnson or Nixon during the brutal US war in Vietnam.

Now for some personal history: back in 1983, I publicly refused to register for the draft in the US, daring the government to "come out and fight," to try and do something about it. This in fact was my introduction to activism.

This took place during a serious attempt by Reagan to bring back conscription to supply troops to his war in El Salvador. Had opposition to registration been weaker, they would have moved on to inductions. I was one of those willing to literally fight a war to stop the draft.

One Vietnam-era draft resistor (or was he a deserter?-I forget) when asked why he didn't claim conscientious objector status said he didn't oppose all wars. He then said he's fight a war to end the draft. This was literally a matter of incinerating draft boards (as is done in Russia today) instead of Vietnamese children.

In my case, the government tapped out-and we later found they were under orders not to engage anyone defying draft registration in or near any major city for fear of opposition.

Prosecution burned out at something like 26 indictments by mid-decade, and Reagan was unable to use conscripts for his war in El Salvador. That played a role in blocking a conventional forces invasion.Nobody was ever indicted again for refusing to register for the draft in the US, only denied access to those student loans that shackle you for life anyway. By the time some states tied it to driver licensing it was too late to save the draft.

I learned from this that governments are not as strong as they want you to think they are, and that they can be forced to back away from a fight. It is possible to raise the stakes until they quit.

Having resisted draft registration myself, I stand in solidarity with anyone inside Israel who refuses to participate in genocide, who refuses to serve in the Israeli Occupation Forces. I will take this one step farther: these courageous draft resistors are honoring those who resisted genocide in Europe in the 1940s. They know genocide when they see it and are saying NO!
