A lot of these problems are inherent in the Nostr protocol.
A problem with making it difficult to block people is that it's easy for bad actors to spam hashtags for your attention.
The battery usage is partially an app thing but it's also a protocol issue, too. The app has to constantly poll 10+ servers for the latest messages.
