Yeah of course it's gold that's viable to extract. As mentioned asteroids are a possible additional source, but to get at the gold in the earth that's not considered viable to extract seems like it would require a leap in physical technology akin to a stark trek molecular transporter (depending on how much of it we're talking). Asteroid mining seems much more viable.
