Watching Molly Shannon and Chris Kattan goof around as Gregorian chanters on “Saturday Night Live” really messed with me. There they were, turning something deep and sacred into a big joke on national TV. It felt like they ripped the soul out of our movement, leaving behind a cartoonish skeleton that everyone could laugh at. The realness, the passion, the spiritual fire we had? It got lost in the giggles and snickers, and man, did that hurt. It seemed like that sketch just drained the cool right out of our chants, marking the beginning of the end in the mainstream.

But the moment that shattered me, the real heartbreak, was seeing what Wal-Mart did.

Walking into Wal-Mart and seeing monk robes — the iconic Gregorian chant fashion — hanging there for anyone to grab, man, that was a total gut punch. It was like watching something pure and rebellious get chewed up and spat out by the big commercial machine. Those robes, once a symbol of our resistance and unity, were now just another cheap, mass-produced item on a rack.

Seeing that, I felt a wild mix of emotions. Anger, sadness, disbelief – it was all there. Our unique identity, the thing that made us stand out and bind together, was now diluted, mainstreamed, and stripped of its authenticity. It wasn’t ‘ours’ anymore; it was just another thing for sale, a Halloween costume for the masses. And just like that, the special vibe, the ‘us against the world’ feeling, started fading away. It felt like the system had won, taking the heart of our movement and leaving behind a lifeless trend.
