Roald Amundsen and Falcon Scott both reached the South Pole. But, although they both dealt with the same circumstances, the same ratio of good and bad weather, the outcomes could not have been more dramatically different.
Jim Collins explains brilliantly in «Great by Choice» how these divergent outcomes resulted from the different behaviors Amundsen and Scott displayed. On one hand, Amundsen had prepared for this years ahead and devised a robust plan with markers, contingencies and redundant supply depots, in case they lost track of their course. He even brought with him four thermometers, while Scott brought only one, and it broke.
