I'll never get used to what I've come to call the "niceness politics" of the South and Midwest. You can be totally incompetent at your job and people will overlook it and make excuses if you're cheery and gregarious. You can believe any incorrect or abhorrent thing and remain in good standing as long as you smile and say "I appreciatcha!"
People avoid confrontation like it's fatal and do everything in their power to avoid seeing, much less alleviating, problems. 1/2
