Imho, people who do, do.
I regularly interact with younger people and a lot of them say they want to be a game developer. I ask them what kind of things they've been working on and 95% of the time it's nothing.
Then there's the one young guy I ask what you've been working on and he's created scripts for games and been working with command line prompts and busy with the project of the day. Those are the people who do.
