Like Matrix, it is an open federated platform, so there's the upside of decentralization and openness as well as the downside of metadata leakage. A key difference is that each group chat on XMPP is centralized to one server, whereas on Matrix it is distributed across many servers (which has the upside of decentralization and the downside of performance, moderation, etc.). There is some encryption on both, but neither compares to Signal.
