Gah! I love the New Yorker, but I succumbed to reading a short story instead of an article. I am a #genre #fiction #author. In the end, a neighbor lived and died, and POV neighbor ended up with a dog and a boring life. Nothing happened. Summed up the story, but it was bought by the magazine. No revelations other the nihilism demonstrated, and poorly. Maybe that was the metaphor? Ugh.
