First off all. Russias goal is not and have never been to "take" all of Ukraine. The goal are to secure certain areas, which they did pretty fast.
Then its an ongoing battle to withhold those areas. Not a struggle to go further. Sometimes the areas move depending on the ongoing battles.
Regarding losing ships to a country with no navy? Is a proxy war, USA and EU are supporting Ukraine!
