Believe it or not, driverless cars were being worked on as far back as the 1960s and 1970s. This 1971 prototype is one of the many experimental vehicles and navigation systems designed for autonomous driving using rudimentary computer systems and sensors.

Despite their limited technology and high costs at the time, it’s a good example of early efforts in transportation which is still ongoing today as the field continues to advance.
