I am reminded of Kuhn's Structure of Scientific Revolution, which points out that when a paradigm shift is attempted, it is the most senior and experienced practitioners who resist it most strongly, because they are the ones who best understand all the things that would be lost. Meanwhile, the juniors, and immigrants from other fields, try out the new tools and discover they can do things with them that they, personally, could not have done before. Jury still out on this outcome.
