You're probably familiar with Mars's four giant shield volcanoes: Ascraeus, Pavonis, Arsia, and Olympus Mons. Now, planetary scientists have discovered that the planet hid another giant volcano in plain sight. The provisionally designed "Noctis volcano" reaches 9,022 meters and measures 450 kilometers across. It escaped discovery until now because it was heavily eroded and right at the boundary of the fractured maze-like terrain of Noctis Labyrinthus.
