I think I'm slowly getting immune to contrived drama in novels. I keep reading a series where the extremely competent hero starts the book living in peace and harmony and then goes on to do something extremely stupid, either getting outright banished or at least risking everything to then spend the rest of the book very competently fixing his and everyone's problems and living in peace. Until the next book.
