I haven't tried this on uSD, but I have on SSD: you may be able to get away with simply under-provisioning the card by using a total of one-third or one-quarter the device's total capacity, causing the device to only write one bit per cell. If you see different write speeds for partitions sized totalling whatever factor accounts for writing one bit vs more bits per cell, then you're effectively operating in pSLC mode without needing to mess with the storage device's firmware.
