I just tried rootstock. at the moment it seems to cost a fair bit more than liquid for basic BTC sends ($0.15), and a lot more expensive than arbitrum for more complex things like token swaps ($1.28), but still cheaper than ethereum L1 and bitcoin L1 overall. this is how it went.

sent 20,000 sat to Boltz - Non-Custodial Bitcoin Bridge (nprofile…66s5) and had it go to rootstock. boltz charged a fee of about 500 sat, then I had to pay about 1,200 sat to claim the amount on the rootstock network. I had to use metamask and my trezor. I think rabby would have also worked.

after I did this, I used sushiswap to buy about 12 RIF so I could register a '.rsk' domain for 10 years. this ended up costing me about 2,800 sat total, and about 1,300 of that was the transaction fee for the swap. very pricey for a EVM network if you compare it to something like arbitrum. I'm used to paying less than a penny to do swaps on EVM networks. maybe it will get more efficient someday.

once I had the 12 RIF, I used RNS to register the domain. the transaction fees for the registration cost me roughly 2,000 sat, and it also took out my 12 RIF.

since my initial send of 20,000 sat, I am now the proud owner of a '.rsk' domain and I am left with about 13,500 sat.

the '.rsk' domain has an administration panel where I can configure not just the EVM style address but also a L1 bitcoin address, and some other currencies as well. it supports subdomains which apparently can be owned by other people if I choose to let them out. the domain also supports URLs and the panel suggests to use things like IPFS. there are other more advanced settings like adding records. it seems pretty similar to the other smart contract domain systems out there.
