My understanding is that US paper weight is defined relative to 500 sheets of “standard” size, which changes with the type of paper. I think it is 38 x 25 inches for text paper, where US letter is 8.5 x 11 inches. \nYou get the same kind of thing with wires: mm² vs AVG.",
