Tears for Fears - The Hurting
A couple of young adults writing songs about their trauma is almost a cliche. But in this debut, Orzabal & Smith lean into making that music modern, appealing and -- despite the presence of the 80s synth sounds you'd expect -- quite stripped-back...which in its wide-open soundscapes somehow masks the incredibly sad subject matter they're singing about.
They'd maintain the emotional focus in later albums, but would never sound this spare again.
