A chicken will work as hard as you make it for its daily food. If you feed it half a pound of feed a day, it won't work hard. Give it .25-.30 lbs a day and it will earn the rest.
This assumes you have land that can provide for it. But I see a lot of y'all bitchin about feed costs with a lot of lush pasture, etc.
