The doctrine is very explicit. We are commanded to forgive. The doctrine does not lay conditions.

Forgiveness is not a transaction nor does your forgiveness or lack thereof hold any weight against those that you may feel slighted by.

You are not a judge. Your lack of forgiveness only works against you, not the offender.

In short, its not yours to give whether its asked of you or not. The act of forgiveness releases burdens from your own soul. The rest is for christ to judge.
