Did they not have a simple backup like a bubble in water they use for measuring sticks on the plane. I can imagine how a capable pilot can keep himself safe long enough for him to find an airfield.
Carefully lower himself below the clouds and follow a highway till you find a landing strip or a empty section of highway if your brave.
