I think your question implies another "can AI become conscious?" This is debatable and I don't have a firm enough grasp of the inner workings or ultimate potential of AI. Clearly Elon Musk believes AI is potentially dangerous, but he didn't say to what extent and by what mode of ability (conscious or not).
