My personal theory is that the early 2000s is when the twin problems of rampant Hollywood nepotism and corporate micromanagement really started to rear their ugly heads.
Basically the studios are now run by Wall Street-type heebs who want everything to be a billion dollar blockbuster. It used to be that studios had a wide range of offerings - ranging from high-budget blockbusters to mid-budget adult thrillers to low budget teenage comedies. Not everything had to be a home run.
Now? Everything has to be a smash hit. We got revenue estimates to meet, goy! Our stock is gonna drop five percent if we don't meet Wall Street predictions! So that's why you see Hollywood continue to run dead, decades old franchises further into the ground. No one wants to give new IPs a shot.
And even if they did, the decline in writing talent is just shocking. Like Lucasfilm legitimately thought a Star Wars show about lesbian nig space witches would actually work.RT:
