My mum taught me a trick with food waste headed for the compost: keep a very small plastic bucket//bin in the kitchen, line the bottom with a small piece of newspaper and then the size will force you to empty it regularly.
Mine does go straight from there onto the compost - and I do get some volunteer tomatoes that way - but I can definitely handle those.
