The Inter-Institutional Task Force met on Tuesday (26th) at the Ministry of Public Prosecution of the Federal District and Territories (MPDFT) to discuss measures related to solid waste management, focusing on the situation of waste pickers and the implications of the Brasília Thermal Power Plant (UTE) project, planned for the Samambaia region. The meeting was attended by representatives from the Public Prosecutor's Office for Citizen Rights (PDDC), the Public Prosecutor's Office for Environmental Defense (Prodema), the Ministry of Labor (MPT), and the Public Defender's Office of the Federal District (DPDF). The main objective of the meeting was to align actions in response to the challenges inherited from the old Structural Landfill, in accordance with the National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS). Among the topics discussed, the concern for the working conditions of waste pickers who collect reusable and recyclable materials stood out. The group discussed proposals to promote social inclusion, ensure the safety of these professionals, and improve the infrastructure of cooperatives and associations involved in the recycling chain. One of the most sensitive points of the meeting was the analysis of the UTE Brasília project. The proposal, which plans to install the power plant in the Samambaia region, raised concerns about its possible environmental, social, and urban impacts, such as the relocation of a nearby school. In response, the PDDC sent a letter to the Federal District government requesting updated information about the project to ensure the rights of the local community and environmental protection. Another recurring theme was the difficulty of cooperatives of waste pickers accessing suitable land. The group advocated for the conduct of individualized land diagnoses, which would allow for the regularization of activities and the strengthening of the actions of these organizations. The safety of waste pickers was also addressed, particularly with regard to exposure to sharp materials, such as needles and syringes. It was emphasized that it is necessary to expand the vaccination coverage of these workers, including vaccination against tetanus and hepatitis B - the latter is not included in the national vaccination calendar. The PDDC requested support from the Health Secretariat to create a specific vaccination program for the category. Participants in the meeting included the district attorney for citizen rights, Eduardo Sabo; the environmental prosecutor, Roberto Carlos Batista; the labor prosecutor, Maria Nely Bezerra; and the public defender, Juliana Braga. The next meeting of the group is scheduled for June 25th. The discussions demonstrate the commitment of the institutions to finding joint solutions to the environmental, social, and sanitary challenges faced by workers involved in the solid waste management chain in the Federal District.
