It seems to mostly be used by people who want to enforce boundaries as to what is good programming by preventing the use of easily acquired memnonic forms.

Most modern languages don't let you use ambiguous constructs without explicitly allowing it though.

As a debate it seems like something that came out of C/C++ and belonged to the '90s.
