While he was still gestating during the family's move from the east coast, his father was killed in combat with indigenous people of that area. He then grew up to run a successful farming operation thanks to the forced labor of a couple dozen people he claimed to “own,” on land that he claimed to “own.” He was also a preacher whose sermons were of some renown.
