For this incident I would reason that the most likely scenario was that my hat was returned to me in the interim and I've forgotten that bit.
Or perhaps the clear memory of losing it was actually a dream that has somehow become lodged as a memory. I discovered a few years ago that this bizarre thing has been happening most of my life. 😱
