From days 12 and 13 of this month, Fiocruz Brasília hosted the II Urban and Periurban Agriculture Seminar in the Federal District, with the theme 'Health Surveillance and the Development of Intersectoral Actions for Prevention and Mitigation of the Impacts of Pesticides on Health and the Environment'. The main objective of the event was to expand the debate on the effects of agricultural chemicals on human health and the environment, promoting intersectoral articulation between institutions and knowledge for the development of joint and sustainable actions. The seminar brought together around 170 participants, including experts, public administrators, health professionals, representatives of the Federal District Government (GDF), social movements, and researchers from all over the country. 'Promoting this meeting between the surveillance of abusive pesticide use, its implications on health, and the role of promotion and assistance in the SUS, especially in the context of climate change, is a major breakthrough. Brasilia is moving towards becoming the capital of agroecology in Brazil, as public policies strengthen intersectoral collaboration between government and civil society,' said Marcos Trajano, a Family Health doctor and manager of Integrative Health Practices at the Federal District Health Secretariat. The Secretary of the Environment of the Federal District, Gutemberg Gomes, participated in the opening and emphasized the importance of the seminar. According to him, the initiative is extremely important for promoting not only sustainable agriculture but also care for the environment and the value of the territory. 'It is essential to dialogue with urban farmers. A seminar like this contributes to inclusion, but also strengthens environmental education,' he stressed. During the seminar, the role of public institutions in building an agenda to address the impacts of pesticides, especially in the urban and periurban context, where agroecological agriculture has been strengthened as a strategy for promoting health, was emphasized. The program included thematic tables, regional experience presentations, and technical debates. One of the highlights was the lecture by Dr. Wanderlei Pignati, a professor and researcher at the Federal University of Mato Grosso, who is a national reference on the impacts of agricultural chemicals, which addressed the links between the intensive use of these substances and the increase in diseases such as cancer, neurological disorders, and congenital malformations. According to Dr. Pignati, the Federal District's agricultural area consumed around 11 million liters of pesticides per harvest. The professor emphasized that in 2024, the Federal District's agricultural area, mainly in Planaltina and Paranoá, consumed around 11 million liters of pesticides per harvest, with soybeans and genetically modified corn prevailing. This consumption represents an increase of over 140% compared to the period between 2000 and 2019. 'Brazilian agriculture has a high consumption of pesticides, with around 5 kg per person, representing an annual consumption of over 1 million tons,' he said. The manager of the Basic Health Unit (UBS) in Planaltina, Sandra Fernandes, also participated in the event and emphasized the importance of the initiative for strengthening health actions in the territory: 'We have an agroforest in our unit, recently revitalized, which is a space for health promotion and education. Participating in this seminar helps us take better care of this location and orient the population on the risks of pesticide use.' She also reaffirmed her commitment to sustainable practices: 'We don't use any type of poison there. We only work with organic composting, pruning residues, and support from partners like Novacap and Emater [Federal District Rural Extension and Technical Assistance Company].'
