If a bank robbery goes bad and all the fiat $100 bills are all dyed completely red. And the government says that money has zero value.. the red $100 bills. That makes it not fungible.
Bitcoin that was used in a crime can be traced to the crime. The government or anyone could say “no I don’t want that bitcoin”. “Using that tainted bitcoin is illegal”. “It went through a mixer we all see and it is illegal”. This makes bitcoin not fungible.
Monero by design looks like any other monero. It is not anyones fault if one particular monero was used by a criminal 28 transactions ago, it looks the same as other Monero.
Monero doesn’t even care what people think of it, it just does what it was designed to do.
