Probably worth mentioning there's several historians who think that the entire reason for the second amendment is because the slave states didn't think a national army would save them from a slave rebellion.

And given the US still has a large neo-Confederate movement there are still a whole lot of white people who are terrified of black people and so they desperately want to keep their gun safety blankets.
They are so frightened of "the other" that they keep buying guns even though the greatest threat from guns for white men is actually suicide.
